Vancouver Area

I was able to visit many countries with my family and in my first profession (travel consultant). I hope to again travel more broadly. In my second profession (librarian), my travel was determined by conference locations through the United States, taking a few days before or after the sessions to see the sites. In the past few years, I have been exploring closer to home with a photographer’s eye - Vancouver, parts of British Columbia, and the Yukon. Below are a few examples, for more, see Places Explored.

Vancouver

A very photogenic and walkable city for strolling. Vancouver’s seawalls, neighbourhoods, bridges, or local parks welcome those with camera in hand. The architecture varies from skyscrapers to low-rise apartments and from cultural beauties to modern forms. When the rain stops, the sidewalks glisten, the rainbows come out and all is wonderful.

Local walks have became more frequent recently and I have also developed studies or series featuring a specific time of day or point of interest such as Granville Island, Olympic Village, the VGH Energy Park, Kitsilano Beach and more.

Walking is a great way to be more aware of the uniqueness of each neighbourhood and even each block. And remember, the best camera is the one you have with you. Mobile devices are becoming more and more sophisticated with great quality. And… only you can determine the best composition.

Vancouver Island - Gabriola and Nanaimo area

During the middle of August 2019, I visited Gabriola Island and Nanaimo for the first time. Flying from Vancouver on Harbour Air offered a quick and very scenic journey getting me there in time for a brief ferry ride to Gabriola Island. Gabriola has beautiful beaches with fascinating examples of the effect of wind and waves on the sandstone rocks, blue and green colours. After an evening ferry back to Nanaimo, I enjoyed a sunset stroll along the harbour.

The next day I explored the harbour again, followed by an evening drive to Parksville and its goats on roofs and sandcastle displays.

The weekend drive with a stop at the Duncan market before a walk along Kinsol Trestle Bridge path. The trip home was a leisurely and beautiful (albeit hazy) cruise on BC Ferries back.
